We are beginning a New Year. But let’s face it — we just don’t always appreciate time and all the opportunities it offers.
Some of us look at the days ahead eagerly, searching for only what we find most enjoyable; others look ahead with dread as they see the uncertainty as something that creates anxiety. But for those of us who follow Christ, the New Year gives us another opportunity to work towards the coming of the Kingdom of God.
So let’s take a look at time as followers of Christ. In this mind-set we greet the New Year, not as a simple change of schedule or routine activities, but as a gift offered to us to continue our work for the Kingdom. It is an opportunity to correct mistakes, to start new tasks, to begin to implement what God asks us to do personally and at a community level and to continue it in the future. Since time is a gift that doesn’t last indefinitely for us, we must at all times be accountable to it and for it.
With sincerity and gratitude, we look at the opportunities to start a new year. We are called to consider what we have done so far and commit ourselves to specific goals for this new beginning that God in His goodness gives us. We should take seriously our passage through the world and our mission towards creation and each other. We must not let the routines of life make us miss a unique opportunity to be and serve God in all of creation. With an open mind and a willing heart and spirit, we must reflect on what God is asking of us to be and do every day.
From this deep space we are enriched with the wisdom that allows us to see what is essential, value things with new eyes, and discover the plan of God in us and through us. With hope springs life because faith gives us the certainty that God’s plan does not falter.
And what will 2016, this New Year, this new beginning, give us?
This New Year gives us many opportunities — to live the faith as a personal and communal encounter with Christ, who gives us our true human identity, and frees us from sin and allows us to begin again. It is a year to continue the work of evangelization that begins at home with our families and from there we bring it out to our communities.
It is a year to strengthen the protection of the environment and make radical changes in our lives that help the environment heal its many wounds caused by humankind. It is a year to experience in our personal lives the mercy of God and to be merciful to others. It is a year to find freedom from the many addictions that enslave us and prevent us from living in peace. Let this be a year of living in peace and not violence.
It’s time to discover who we are in the eyes of God. In this new beginning of a new year, let us be open to the things God expects from us today and every day.

Año Nuevo Año Es Dios
Estamos comenzando un nuevo año. No siempre entendemos y valoramos el tiempo en todo lo que significa y ofrece. Algunos simplemente pasan los días buscando lo que les resulte más cómodo y agradable. Otros lo ven como algo incierto que crea angustia. Para quienes seguimos a Cristo vale y es asumido como una oportunidad para trabajar en el advenimiento del Reino de Dios.
Por tanto, miremos el tiempo, del que nos hace conscientes el paso a un nuevo año, no como un simple cambio de agenda o un salto repetido en las actividades rutinarias, sino como un don que se nos ofrece para que sigamos realizando nuestro proyecto personal y eclesial. Es una oportunidad para corregir errores, para comenzar nuevas tareas, para proyectar lo que Dios nos pide, a nivel personal y comunitario, hacia el futuro. Si el tiempo es un regalo, que no dura indefinidamente para cada uno de nosotros, debemos ser responsables frente a él.
Con sinceridad y agradecimiento miremos las oportunidades que tenemos al comenzar un nuevo año. Examinemos lo que hasta ahora hemos hecho y propongámonos unas metas concretas para esta nueva etapa que la bondad de Dios nos permite comenzar. Tomemos en serio nuestro paso por el mundo y nuestra misión frente a la creación y los demás. No permitamos que las rutinas gasten una ocasión irrepetible de ser y de servir a Dios en todo lo creado. Debemos reflexionar serenamente sobre lo que Dios hace y nos pide cada día.
Desde esta profundización se llega a la sabiduría que nos permite ver lo esencial, valorar las cosas con ojos nuevos, descubrir el plan de Dios en nosotros y a través de nosotros. Frente a la vida brota la esperanza, porque la fe nos da la seguridad de que el proyecto de Dios no tiene reversa.
El nuevo año es una gran oportunidad para vivir la fe como un encuentro personal y comunitario con Cristo, que nos da la verdadera identidad humana, que nos libra del pecado y nos permite comenzar de nuevo. Es un año para continuar la tarea de la evangelización en casa y en familia y de allí a nuestras comunidades.
Es un año para fortalecer el cuidado del medio ambiente y hacer cambios radicales en nuestras vidas que ayudan al medio ambienta sanar de las muchas heridas causados por la humanidad. Es un año para sentir en nuestra vida personal la misericordia de Dios y ser misericordiosos con los demás. Es un año de encontrar libertad de las muchas adicciones que nos esclavizan y no nos dejan vivir en paz. Un año de vivir en la paz y no más en la violencia. Es el momento de descubrir quienes somos a los ojos de Dios. Éstas y muchas otras cosas espera Dios de nosotros hoy y cada día de este nuevo año.
