The Catholic Media Conference, an annual gathering of diocesan Catholic communications representatives, book and magazine publishers and newspaper editors and staffs, was held June 1-3 in St. Louis this year.

Bishop Edward K. Braxton celebrated a liturgy June 3 at the Old Cathedral that is designated by the conference as a Mass to remember members of the Catholic Press Association that died during this calendar year.

After greeting the people at the beginning of the liturgy, the bishop told those gathered that he was happy to return to the Old Cathedral because he celebrated his first Mass there after being ordained an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Louis at the Old Cathedral.

As members of the Catholic Press Association greeted the bishop at the end of the liturgy, many of them asked for a copy of his homily, based on his most recent pastoral letter, “The Catholic Church and The Black Lives Matter Movement: The Racial Divide in the United States Revisited.”

The homily asks listeners to hear with ears that are open to imagining a world different from one they are accustomed to inhabiting.

Since it was not taped at the Old Cathedral, the bishop prepared the homily in written form for distribution.
