November 29 is the first Sunday of Advent when we begin a new liturgical year. As we enter the season of Advent, let us remember with joy and certainty that we are God’s beloved children. The word Advent means “coming.” It refers to the presence begun by God himself among us.
This tells us that God, even if often hidden, is in our midst. His presence is still not complete, but is in the constant process of being revealed to us. It is through us, through our faith and our love, that God wants to make His light shine.
The invitation is then to be alert, to awaken from sleep, as the night goes by and the day is near; salvation is now nearer to us (cf Rm 13:11). This is a time of reflection and hope; a time to prepare our hearts for Christ to be born into them. We will be guided by the Word of God that cries with the voice of Isaiah: “Prepare the way of the Lord” (Is 40.3); and to his word we respond with the earnest supplication of the Spirit who lives within us: “Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20). It is a time of great hope and anticipation
We rejoice as the time comes and we receive our Savior through the person of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “the daughter of Zion and joy of Israel.”
It is she who teaches us to achieve our encounter with the Lord, to be available for the work of God and walk with hope toward the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells (2 Peter 3:13). This should have concrete implications in our service to the church, in the generous assistance to the poor, the passion to bring to all the joy of the Gospel: in other words, to be missionaries of Advent!
The road to Christmas that the Church proposes to us in this time of Advent contains an extraordinary wealth of light, energy and spiritual renewal. We are called not to remain in darkness but to take advantage of these gifts in our homes, in our small communities and in our parishes. We are called to go beyond the secular, consumer-oriented society and superficial empty diversions.
The encounter with Christ is the only thing which can renew the world and heal all our imbalances.
Let us accept the grace of Advent. This is the time to discover the meaning of our human and Christian dignity, to examine our lives and to embrace a life consistent with the wonderful creation we are and with the important mission that has been entrusted to us.

La venida de Adviento

El próximo 29 de Noviembre, Vamos a comenzar un nuevo año litúrgico. Entramos en él con el tiempo de Adviento, que nos trae la alegría de sentir que somos amados y salvados por Dios.
La palabra Adviento quiere decir “presencia” o “llegada”; se refiere a la presencia comenzada de Dios mismo en medio de nosotros.
Esto implica que Dios, aunque de manera oculta, está en medio de nosotros y que su presencia aún no es total, sino que está en proceso de revelación. Es por medio de nosotros, de nuestra fe y de nuestro amor, como él quiere hacer brillar su luz.
La invitación es entonces a ponernos en pie, a despertar del sueño, pues la noche va pasando y se acerca el día; la salvación está ahora más cerca de nosotros (cf Rm 13,11). Este es un tiempo de reflexión y de esperanza que prepara nuestro corazón para que Cristo nazca en él. Nos guiara la Palabra de Dios que clama con la voz de Isaías: “Preparen el camino del Señor” (Is 40,3); y a ella respondemos con la súplica ardiente del Espíritu que ora en nosotros: “Ven, Señor Jesús” (Ap 22,20 ).
En la persona de María, “la hija de Sión y alegría de Israel”, la “dichosa porque ha creído lo que le fue anunciado”, el tiempo alcanza su plenitud y nos llega el Salvador.
Es ella quien nos enseña a realizar nuestro encuentro con el Señor, a estar disponibles para la obra de Dios y a caminar con esperanza hacia la tierra nueva y el cielo nuevo en los que habita la justicia (2 Pe 3,13). Esto debe tener implicaciones concretas en el servicio al Iglesia, en la ayuda generosa a los pobres, en la pasión por llevar a todos la alegría del Evangelio. En otras palabras, a ser misioneros del adviento!
El camino hacia la Navidad que la Iglesia nos propone en este tiempo de Adviento contiene una extraordinaria riqueza de luz, de energía y de renovación espiritual, de la cual tenemos una gran necesidad para no permanecer en las tinieblas. Propongámonos aprovechar este don en nuestros hogares, en nuestras pequeñas comunidades y en nuestras parroquias, sin que nos domine el ambiente secular que en estos días quieren imponer la sociedad de consumo y la superficialidad que sólo busca diversiones vacías.
El encuentro con Cristo es lo único que puede renovar el mundo y sanar todos nuestros desequilibrios.
Acojamos la gracia del Adviento, para descubrir el sentido de nuestra dignidad humana y cristiana, para hacerle limpieza a nuestra conciencia y para asumir una vida coherente con el maravilloso proyecto que somos y con la importante misión que se nos ha confiado.
