According to the decree of suppression issued by Bishop Edward K. Braxton, the parish of St. Leo in Modoc will be suppressed on March 3, 2014.
On Jan. 19 the parish community of St. Augustine of Hippo celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with praise dancers and words about the late civil rights leader.
The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ have served in diverse ministries throughout the Diocese of Belleville since the first sisters arrived in the diocese in 1891 at Sacred Heart Home in Aviston.
Looking back and looking ahead, on Dec. 28, 2013 the parish family at St. Stephen in Caseyville celebrated the parish’s 120th anniversary at the 5 p.m. liturgy.
In this first quarter of 2014 we will see five parishes in the diocese close with their official suppression date March 3. The official date comes two days before Ash Wednesday this year.
