Editor and General Manager for The Messenger


The Diocese of Belleville is seeking an Editor and General Manager for the diocesan newspaper, The Messenger. The Messenger delivers local, regional and national Catholic news within the southern 28 counties of Illinois. The newspaper is delivered bi-weekly to approximately 5,000 paid subscribers by mail. The Editor and General Manager performs a variety of functions to manage the business of the newspaper, to perform the tasks of reporter, copy editor, writer and photographer, and evaluate existing communications in the diocese and recommend new media tools to communicate to the faithful of the diocese while also attending business meetings and interfacing with diocesan personnel. The Editor and General Manager must work in close collaboration with the Bishop of the Diocese, who is the Publisher of the paper. It is his prerogative to encourage reporting on news and events in the Church that he deems important for the Christian faithful in southern Illinois. As the primary teacher of the Catholic faith in the Diocese, he has a unique responsibility for making sure that nothing appears in the paper that is contrary to the teachings and disciplines of the Church. The Publisher supports the efforts of the Editor in communicating the Good News of Jesus Christ to all of the members of the Church.

The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or English, with a master’s degree preferred; or have equivalent experience; and 1-3 years’ experience in a related role. The successful candidate will have knowledge of cameras, and desktop publishing skills with Adobe programs and Microsoft Office. The Messenger operates on dual platforms so a knowledge of both Macintosh and PC computers is necessary, as well as knowledge of website design, and other computer programs/applications. Practicing Catholic required with thorough knowledge and understanding of Catholic teachings, practices and organizational structure.

Program Assistant/Onsite Coordinator


The Diocese of Belleville is seeking a part time (maximum 16 hours per week) Program Assistant/Onsite Coordinator. The Program Assistant/Onsite Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of “Into My Vineyard Formation for Lay Ecclesial Ministry in our Parishes” under the direction of the Lay Ecclesial Ministry committee. Regular duties include scheduling facilitators, managing the program webpage, coordinating with the parish host sites, obtaining copyright permissions, and acting as a liaison between facilitators, program participants and Lay Ecclesial Ministry committee. The Program Assistant/Onsite Coordinator must be available to be onsite one Saturday per month during the program period of September – May.

Essential qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent; an understanding of the Catholic faith and knowledge of media equipment including troubleshooting.
