Hispanic youth go on pilgrimage for a day

Using a theme of pilgrimage with the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry sponsored a gathering of youth June 4 for Hispanic Youth Day, an annual event in the diocese.

Father David Uribe OMI, of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, explained “pilgrimage” to the 106 youth and about 30 adults who spent a rainy morning at the shrine church wearing shirts with this year’s theme: El Camino: Mercy in Motion.

Those gathered listened to Father Uribe tell the stories of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of the Snows. Then, walking behind banners depicting these three titles given to Mary at different times in history and places in the world, the group prayed the rosary.

The youth received three medals to remind them of Our Lady’s miraculous appearances under each of her titles.

Later, youth gathered at the Pastoral Center for lunch and an afternoon activity.
They watched videos about the Jubilee of Mercy, Holy Doors and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.

They spent time working on a project to remind them of what those works are and who would benefit from their practice of them.

After putting together their own “doors,” they were asked to write down which works they would perform during this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
